CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Nancy Thompson Fowler died on September 21, after a long illness.

She was the beloved wife of the late Cruger Delafield Groesbeck Fowler Jr., who died in 2009. They were married for 43 years.

Daughter of Charles and Christine Maxwell Thompson of Clarksburg, West Virginia, Nancy was a graduate of Stuart Hall Preparatory School in Virginia and Briarcliff Junior College in New York, where she was envied for her beautiful legs and knee-high argyle socks.

A direct descendant of John Hart, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, she was a member of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, the National Society of Colonial Dames and the New England Society.

Nancy received a degree from the New York School of Interior Design and started her career in decorating and design at Bloomingdales.

She served on many boards and charitable organizations, including Sheltering Arms Children’s Service, The East Side House Settlement, and the Society for the Relief of Women and Children. Nancy was on the Women’s Committee of the Bronx Zoo and for 10 years co-chaired the Winter Antique Show’s opening night Gala. Nancy’s parties were legendary. Friends still talk about her famous Christmas parties and her table settings were envied and remembered by many.

She belonged to the Lawrence Beach Club, Doubles, and for 46 years was an active member of the Colony Club. Nancy also cherished travel and sun-filled family summers at Bailey’s Beach in Newport, and the Coral Beach Club in Bermuda. Nancy was an avid duplicate Bridge Player, achieving the rank of Ruby Life Master. A ruthless competitor, she was also a generous mentor to new players.

When theatrical or musical performances opened on Broadway, Nancy was among the first to buy tickets for family and friends, and she always regaled friends with her reviews.

Nancy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She had the uncanny ability to make everyone feel special, she always remembered birthdays and delighted her friends and family with thoughtful and often amusing gifts. Nancy will always be remembered for her great sense of fun, impeccable style, wisdom, and sparkling blue-eyes.

Nancy is survived by her two sons, Cruger Delafield Groesbeck Fowler III and Scudder Thompson Fowler; her daughter-in-law, Erica Knutson Fowler; her adored grandchildren, Scudder Thompson Fowler Jr. and Juliette Ann Fowler; and her beloved Shih Tzu, Miss Lily.

As per her wishes, there will be no service, and burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of New York, 306 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022.
